Borgarfjörður eystri is the northernmost of the true Eastfjords and one of the most distinctive fjords in Iceland. The drive from Egilsstaðir is approximately 70 km, passing over Vatnsskarð and through the steep slopes of Njarðvíkurskriður. The fjord is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and exceptional natural beauty.

The mountain ring surrounding Borgarfjörður eystri is truly unique. To the south, light-coloured rhyolite dominates the scenery, particularly in Staðarfjall, while darker basalt formations prevail near the head of the fjord and to the north, most notably in the imposing Dyrfjöll. This geological contrast gives the area its striking colours and remarkable character.

Extending inland from the fjord is a lush valley approximately ten kilometres long, through which the river Fjarðará flows toward the sea. At the head of the fjord lies the village of Bakkagerði, the heart of settlement in Borgarfjörður eystri.

Settlement and livelihood

Life in Borgarfjörður eystri has traditionally been shaped by sheep farming, small-boat fishing and fish processing — activities that remain important today. Around ten farms are still inhabited in the surrounding countryside, with several thousand sheep grazing the extensive mountain pastures both within the fjord and across the Víkna area.

Local fishing is mainly carried out by small vessels, using longlines and handlines. The catch is processed locally as salted fish, and the village has a long tradition of producing dried fish and fermented shark. During spring, several boats also participate in lumpfish fishing, a common seasonal activity along the Eastfjords.

Nature and experiences

Borgarfjörður eystri is widely known for its outdoor recreation and rich wildlife. The area is considered one of Iceland’s best locations for observing puffins, which nest in large numbers in the nearby cliffs and islets close to the village.

Numerous hiking routes lead through the surrounding mountains, including trails across the Dyrfjöll range and onward to the historic Víkna Trails, ancient routes once used by travellers between remote fjords.

Borgarfjörður eystri offers a rare combination of dramatic nature, deep-rooted traditions and a peaceful village atmosphere. Here, rugged landscapes and everyday life exist side by side, making the fjord one of the most memorable destinations in the Eastfjords of Iceland.
