Kjölur is one of Iceland’s most famous and historic highland routes. The road runs between Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers, connecting South and North Iceland.
Used for centuries as a travel route across the interior, Kjölur is mentioned in ancient Icelandic sources. Today it is a popular gravel road for 4x4 travelers seeking remote landscapes and highland scenery.
Along the route are several well-known stops, including Kerlingarfjöll, Hveravellir, and vast volcanic deserts.
