Vopnafjörður
Vopnafjörður is a broad fjord on Iceland’s northeast coast,
situated between
Bakkaflói
and
Héraðsflói.
The fjord opens northward and is surrounded by dramatic
mountain ranges, wide valleys, and varied coastal landscapes.
At the center of the fjord lies
Kolbeinstangi,
a narrow headland extending into the sea, where the town of
Vopnafjörður
is located.
North of the headland lies the inner fjord
Nýpsfjörður,
with the lagoon Nýpslón further inland, an important wetland area.
Across the fjord rises an extensive mountain chain that defines
the character of the area.
The
Krossavíkur Mountains
are the most prominent, while the
Smjör Mountains
to the south form the highest peaks in the region.
Three major valleys extend inland from the fjord.
To the south lies
Hofsárdalur,
followed by
Vesturárdalur,
and
Selárdalur
to the north.
Each valley is crossed by renowned salmon rivers that have long
played an important role in local life and economy.
Vopnafjörður offers extensive opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Numerous marked hiking routes cross the area, suitable for both
challenging mountain hikes and gentle walks near the settlement.
A nine-hole golf course is located just outside the town,
set within the surrounding landscape.
The coastline is especially diverse, featuring small islets,
sea cliffs, rock stacks, and striking geological formations.
At the head of the fjord lies the broad sandy beach of
Sandvík,
one of the area’s most scenic coastal areas.
Vopnafjörður combines expansive wilderness, rich river systems,
and dramatic coastal scenery with a close-knit community shaped
by the natural environment of northeast Iceland.
