Arnarker, often simply referred to as Kerið, is a beautiful
and fascinating lava cave located in the Leitarhraun lava field. This vast
area is home to numerous lava caves, many of which extend over 500 meters in
length. Arnarker stands out in particular due to its dramatic entrance, where
visitors descend approximately 16 meters down into the cave.
Inside the cave, two main routes can be explored. The passage leading south is
around 100 meters long, while the northern route stretches for about 400
meters into the lava field. The terrain inside the cave is mostly easy to
traverse and partially vegetated, making it accessible for most visitors,
although there is one section in the longer passage where the ceiling becomes
noticeably low.
Access to Arnarker is straightforward. Travelers drive through the Þrengslin
mountain pass from Reykjavík, and once descending from the pass, turn right
at the first junction. From there, it is approximately a 5-kilometer drive to
a signposted turnoff leading to Arnarker.
The surrounding area offers several interesting attractions. Nearby is
Búri, another lava cave in the same region, as well
as the well-known
Raufarhólshellir, one of Iceland’s most
accessible lava tunnels. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities such
as the
disc golf course in Þorlákshöfn
or relax at the
Þorlákshöfn swimming pool. The
coastal town of
Þorlákshöfn
provides various services, while the nearby
camping site
and scenic walks around the
Þorlákshöfn lighthouse
make the area well worth exploring.
