Hafrafell

Hafrafell is a prominent mountain near Mosfellsbær, just north of Iceland’s capital region. The mountain marks the transition between urban areas and open highland terrain and is clearly visible from surrounding districts.

Hafrafell is especially well known for aerial and gliding sports. Its consistent wind conditions and open slopes provide excellent facilities for paragliding, hang gliding, and other forms of non-motorized flight, making it one of Iceland’s key locations for these sports.

At the foot of the mountain lie popular outdoor and recreation areas, including Hafravatn, Varmárlaug, and the Mosfellsbær Campsite. The area is frequently used by hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers.

Nearby landmarks include Mosfell Church and Lágafell Church, which reflect the long settlement history of the region. From the summit, views often extend toward Úlfarsfell and across much of the capital area.

The close proximity of Hafrafell to recreational facilities such as Lágafell Swimming Pool and the Grafarholt Disc Golf Course makes the mountain a popular year-round destination for outdoor activities.
