Búlandstindur

Búlandstindur is a 1,069-meter-high basalt mountain located near Djúpivogur in East Iceland. The mountain is estimated to be around eight million years old and is widely regarded as one of the most beautifully shaped mountains in Iceland. Many visitors believe Búlandstindur to be a place of special natural energy, attracting people seeking tranquility and a deeper connection with nature.

About 700 meters east of Búlandstindur lies a mountain ridge known as Goðaborg. According to local legends, people carried their pagan idols there shortly after the Christianization of Iceland and threw them from the cliffs. Other sources describe Goðaborg as a broad, flat rock platform high on the northeastern side of the mountain. Folklore tells of a nearby water source and ritual offerings made to the gods in hopes of prosperity and peace.

The hiking route

Every year, many hikers make their way to the summit of Búlandstindur, drawn by the mountain’s striking form and the exceptional views from the top. The most common route follows a gravel track along the southern side of the Búlandsá river and into the valley toward a small dam. From there, the trail continues uphill through grassy slopes and scree within Stóruskriðugil, heading toward a mountain pass further inland.

Once on the ridge, the route naturally leads to the main summit. The final section is narrow and steep, but the reward is a breathtaking panorama across Berufjörður, Álftafjörður, and the surrounding mountains near Djúpivogur.

Caution is essential, especially in poor visibility or icy conditions. Hikers should avoid moving too far east, as the eastern face of the mountain is extremely steep and rocky. Mobile phone reception is generally good on the summit, but proper preparation and suitable equipment are always necessary when hiking Búlandstindur.
