The Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most famous and widely traveled sightseeing route and has for decades been the first introduction many visitors have to the country’s natural landscapes. The route runs through South Iceland and brings together dramatic scenery, geothermal activity, waterfalls, and sites of great historical importance within a relatively short distance.

The journey often begins at Þingvellir, one of Iceland’s most important historical sites and the location where the Icelandic parliament was founded in 930 AD. Þingvellir is also a unique geological area where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates slowly drift apart, creating a rare combination of cultural history and natural forces.

From Þingvellir, the route continues to the geothermal valley of Haukadalur, home to the famous geysers Geysir and Strokkur. While Geysir itself is usually inactive today, the area remains highly active, showcasing steaming vents and bubbling hot springs. Strokkur erupts regularly and provides visitors with a reliable and impressive display of geothermal power.

The route then leads to one of Iceland’s most powerful waterfalls, Gullfoss, where the river Hvítá plunges in two stages into a deep canyon. Gullfoss has long been regarded as a symbol of Icelandic nature and played a key role in one of the country’s earliest environmental conservation movements in the early 20th century.

Many travelers also choose to spend time at Laugarvatn, where geothermal bathing, peaceful surroundings, and scenic landscapes offer a welcome contrast to the dramatic natural landmarks along the route. This combination of nature, history, and accessibility has made the Golden Circle an ideal destination for both short day trips and longer stays.

Thanks to its accessibility and remarkable diversity, the Golden Circle has become a cornerstone of tourism in Iceland. Along the route, visitors encounter volcanic landscapes, glacial rivers, geothermal energy, and centuries of history, all woven together into a single journey that captures the essence of the country.
