Bolungarvík is a coastal town in the
Westfjords of Iceland, located at the northern end of
Ísafjarðardjúp.
It is one of the oldest settlements in the region and has long been closely connected
to fishing and maritime life due to its proximity to rich fishing grounds.
Before gaining municipal status, the community was known as
Hólshreppur. Today, Bolungarvík is the second-largest town in the
Westfjords after Ísafjörður and continues to play an
important role in the region’s economy and cultural heritage.
Settlement in Bolungarvík dates back to the Viking Age. The farm
Hóll, mentioned in early historical sources, served as the main estate
from the mid-13th century and is believed to be the earliest farm in the area.
The present-day town stands on land once occupied by the farms Tröð, Ytri-Búðir,
Heimari-Búðir, and Grundarhóll.
For centuries, Bolungarvík was one of the most important fishing stations in
Ísafjarðardjúp.
Rowing boats operated from the shoreline, the Grundir area, and from
Ósvör, which is now preserved as a traditional fishing-station museum.
During the 17th century, 20–30 boats sailed from the bay, and by the turn of the 20th century
the number had grown to nearly 90.
Although many fishing huts once stood along the shore — 18 are recorded in the early
18th century — Bolungarvík never developed a traditional seafarers’ quarter.
The town’s history reflects the demanding conditions of coastal life and the resilience
of the fishing community.
According to local legend, the settler Þuríður sundafyllir claimed the land
in Bolungarvík. She was the mother of Völusteinn, and several streets in the
town are named after the pair. Folklore tells that Þuríður was later turned to stone,
a feature still pointed out near the town.
A staffed meteorological observation station has operated in Bolungarvík
since 1994, providing important weather data for the Westfjords region.
Today, Bolungarvík is a vibrant fishing town surrounded by steep mountains and dramatic
coastline. It is a popular destination for travellers seeking authentic Westfjords culture,
outdoor activities, hiking trails, and insight into Iceland’s traditional fishing heritage.
