Brekkurétt in Borgarfjörður is an old and historically significant stone-built sheep corral that reflects the strong farming traditions and sheep-rounding culture of the area. It was used during the annual autumn sheep roundup, when sheep were gathered from the highlands and sorted according to ownership.
The corral is constructed from natural stone and blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Its traditional design features a central enclosure where the sheep were driven in, with smaller pens around it for sorting. Such structures were essential to rural life in earlier centuries and relied heavily on cooperation between neighboring farms.
Today, Brekkurétt stands as an important cultural heritage site, offering insight into traditional Icelandic farming practices. It is an interesting stop for hikers and visitors who wish to learn more about the history of Borgarfjörður and Iceland’s rural past.
