Eystrahorn is a 756-meter-high mountain located at the
outer end of Hvalnes, east of the Lón area in South-East Iceland. The
mountain is a striking landmark, rising steeply from the surrounding
coastal and sandy terrain.
Between Eystrahorn and Vestrahorn lies a long sandy beach, with two
fjords or lagoons behind it: Papafjörður and Lónsfjörður. This creates
a distinctive landscape shaped by the interaction of mountains, sea,
and sand.
Eystrahorn is composed mainly of gabbro and granophyre and is of
considerable geological interest. Various minerals have been found
within the mountain, including gold, silver, and mercury, attracting
attention from geologists over the years.
Historically, the mountain was known as Hvalneshorn, while Vestrahorn
was called Eystrahorn. At the same time, the mountain Horn in the
Hornstrandir region was referred to as Vestrahorn, reflecting how
place names have changed over time.
