Frostastaðavatn is a beautiful highland lake located in the
Landmannalaugar region of Iceland’s interior. The lake lies within the
Landmannafréttur area and is surrounded by striking volcanic landscapes, with
Dómdalshraun lava fields to the west, Námahraun to the south, and Frostastaðahraun
to the north.
The lake covers an area of approximately 2.6 square kilometers and has an average
depth of about five meters. It is primarily fed by snowmelt, rainfall, and runoff
from the surrounding highlands, forming an important part of the local
hydrological system.
Frostastaðavatn lies along two well-known highland routes, Fjallabaksleið nyrðri
(F208) and Landmannaleið (F225), making it a common stopping point for travelers
exploring the Fjallabak Nature Reserve and the Landmannalaugar area.
The surrounding scenery is shaped by repeated volcanic eruptions over thousands of
years, creating a dramatic mix of colorful rhyolite mountains, dark lava fields,
and wide open highland plains.
Frostastaðavatn is also known as a popular fishing lake, particularly for trout,
and attracts anglers as well as hikers, photographers, and nature lovers seeking
a peaceful and remote highland experience.
