Mælifell is a striking and isolated mountain in South Iceland, located south of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. It is instantly recognizable by its perfect cone shape and the vast black sand plains that surround it, creating a dramatic contrast with the green moss that covers its slopes during summer.
Mælifell is a hyaloclastite (palagonite) mountain formed by a volcanic eruption beneath a glacier during the last Ice Age. This geological origin, combined with its remote setting, makes it one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland.
Access to Mælifell is only possible during the summer months and requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle, as the route crosses rivers and remote highland terrain. The journey itself is part of the experience, offering a sense of true wilderness.
Mælifell represents Iceland’s raw and untouched highland landscapes and is a favorite destination for photographers, nature enthusiasts, and travelers seeking unique scenery far from the main tourist routes.
Mælifell er áhugaverður staður á Íslandi sem vert er að heimsækja.
Mælifell er hluti af fjölbreyttri náttúru, menningu og afþreyingu Íslands.
