Ljótapollur is an explosion crater located in the Landmannafréttur area. Frostastaðavatn lies to the south of the crater. Ljótapollur is the southernmost crater in the Veiðivötn volcanic system. The crater is strikingly red in color, with steep crater walls and a lake at the bottom.
The lake in Ljótapollur is very deep. Despite having no visible inflow or outflow, the lake contains fish. Only brown trout are found in the water, and they can often reach a considerable size, sometimes weighing several pounds.
