Háteigur Church is located at the intersection of Háteigsvegur and Lönguhlíð / Nóatún in Reykjavík. It serves the parish of Háteigur.
The Háteigur parish was established by law on 17 July 1952. In 1963, parish boundaries were adjusted following the creation of the Grensás parish. Háteigur Church was consecrated during Advent in 1965.
In its early years, the congregation did not have a permanent church. Services were held in Fossvogur Church and in the ceremonial hall of the Icelandic Seamen’s School. Construction of the church began in September 1957. The architect was Halldór H. Jónsson, and the first sod was turned by Þórður Jasonarson, chairman of the parish council.
When the church was consecrated in 1965 by Bishop Sigurbjörn Einarsson, some parts of the building were still unfinished. The completion of the parish hall in 1996 greatly improved facilities for church activities. The hall stands north of the church and is connected to it by glass corridors.
Háteigur Church is a prominent landmark of the neighbourhood and plays an important role in the religious, social and cultural life of Reykjavík.
