The Sun Voyager (Sólfarið) is one of the most iconic outdoor artworks in Reykjavík. The sculpture stands by the waterfront with open views across Faxaflói Bay and Mount Esja, and has become one of the city’s most photographed landmarks.
The artwork was selected through a public competition organised by the Vesturbær residents’ association in 1986, held in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Reykjavík. The original aluminium model was created by Icelandic sculptor Jónína Guðnadóttir and later donated to the city for enlargement.
The full-scale stainless-steel sculpture was unveiled on 18 August 1990, Reykjavík’s official anniversary date. The form resembles both a Viking ship and a dream vessel, symbolising hope, discovery, and the human desire to explore new horizons.
Its location by the sea gives the sculpture a powerful atmosphere, with waves at its feet and Mount Esja rising in the background. At sunset, during changing weather, or beneath the northern lights, the Sun Voyager offers a truly memorable experience and remains one of Iceland’s most beloved public artworks.
