Aldeyjarfoss is a striking waterfall in the
Skjálfandafljót river in Bárðardalur, North Iceland. The waterfall drops
approximately 20 meters into a narrow channel and is surrounded by
impressive and well-formed columnar basalt.
The basalt columns around Aldeyjarfoss are part of a lava field known as
Frambruni, also referred to as Suðurárhraun. The pale, glacial color of
the river creates a strong and beautiful contrast with the dark basalt
rock, giving the waterfall its distinctive appearance.
The cliffs and rocks surrounding the waterfall provide nesting sites
for a variety of bird species, including gyrfalcons, merlins, pink-footed
geese, greylag geese, and mallards. This makes the area attractive not
only to hikers but also to birdwatchers.
Aldeyjarfoss is a popular destination for nature lovers and
photographers and is considered one of the most notable natural
features along the Skjálfandafljót river.
