Skútustaðagígar is a unique crater field located on the southern shore of Lake Mývatn and is considered one of the most remarkable natural sites in Northeast Iceland. The craters were formed around 2,300 years ago when hot lava flowed into wetlands and shallow water, causing steam explosions that created so-called pseudocraters.
Unlike true volcanic craters, Skútustaðagígar are not connected to a central volcanic vent but were formed through the interaction of lava and water. The area features numerous craters of varying sizes, with vegetation on their slopes and beautiful views over Lake Mývatn and its surroundings.
Today, Skútustaðagígar is a protected nature reserve and an important educational site for understanding Iceland’s geology and volcanic processes. Marked walking paths allow visitors to explore the area safely while preserving its fragile environment.
Skútustaðagígar er áhugaverður staður á Íslandi sem vert er að heimsækja.
