Stóra Víti is an explosion crater and lake located in the Krýsuvík geothermal area on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The crater was formed during a phreatic eruption, when magma came into contact with water or water-saturated ground.
The water in Stóra Víti is often light blue or greenish in color, with its appearance changing depending on light conditions, weather, and mineral content. The steep crater walls clearly display layered deposits that offer insight into the volcanic and geological history of the area.
Stóra Víti is part of an active geothermal landscape, surrounded by steam vents, hot springs, and vividly colored geothermal features that characterize the Krýsuvík area. The site is a popular stop for hikers and visitors seeking to experience Iceland’s geothermal activity up close.
Due to steep slopes and unstable ground, visitors are advised not to approach the water’s edge. Following marked paths and exercising caution helps ensure both personal safety and the protection of this fragile natural environment.
