Dettifoss is considered the most powerful waterfall in Iceland and one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. The waterfall is approximately 45 meters high and over 100 meters wide, plunging into the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, which originates from the glacier Vatnajökull.
During summer meltwater and after heavy rainfall, the volume of glacial water can become enormous. The muddy, grey-brown water crashes into the depths of Jökulsárgljúfur, creating thunderous noise, heavy spray, and noticeable ground vibrations that make visiting Dettifoss an unforgettable experience.
Dettifoss is part of Vatnajökull National Park and is classified as a protected natural monument. The surrounding landscape has been shaped by volcanic eruptions, glacial floods, and continuous erosion, forming one of Iceland’s most dramatic canyon systems.
Nearby are several other remarkable waterfalls. Upstream lies the elegant Selfoss, known for its wide horseshoe-shaped cascade, while downstream is the powerful Hafragilsfoss, which drops into a narrow and rugged gorge.
Dettifoss can be accessed from both the east and west sides of the river, with walking paths leading to viewing platforms that allow visitors to safely experience the immense power of the waterfall.
Dettifoss is one of Iceland’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, dramatically demonstrating the raw forces of nature where fire, ice, and water meet in constant motion.
Dettifoss er einn stærsti og öflugasti foss Íslands.
