Djúpalónssandur is a black pebble beach located at the foot of Snæfellsjökull glacier on the western side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The beach is known for its dramatic landscape, dark volcanic stones, and striking natural surroundings where volcanoes, the ocean, and history come together.
The area contains remains of the former fishing station of Djúpalón, which was once an important center for fishing activities. Scattered across the beach are iron fragments from the British trawler Epine GY 7, which was wrecked nearby in 1948, serving as a reminder of the dangers faced by seafarers.
Djúpalónssandur is also famous for its traditional lifting stones, once used to test the strength of fishermen. Today, the site is a popular destination for visitors and hikers, who are advised to exercise caution, as the powerful waves along the shore can be dangerous.
