Esjuberg is a historically important settlement site located by Kollafjörður, at the foothills of Mount Esja on the Kjalarnes peninsula.
According to the medieval Kjalnesinga Saga, the settler Örlygur Hrappsson established his farm at Esjuberg after arriving in Iceland from the Hebrides of Scotland. He is believed to have built one of the earliest Christian churches in Iceland at this location.
Today, visible remains and a memorial mark the site, highlighting its importance in Iceland’s early settlement and religious history. Esjuberg is a popular stop for visitors interested in Viking Age history and cultural heritage.
The area offers scenic views across the fjord and toward surrounding mountains, making Esjuberg a meaningful blend of history and natural beauty.
