Kópavogur Church was built between 1958 and 1962 based on designs from the
Office of the State Architect, which was led at the time by Hörður Bjarnason.
Architect Ragnar Emilsson, who worked at the office, collaborated closely
with the State Architect on the design of the church.
The foundation stone was consecrated on August 16, 1958, and the cornerstone
was laid by the Bishop of Iceland on November 20 the following year.
The church was formally consecrated on December 16, 1962, by Sigurbjörn
Einarsson, who was then the Bishop of Iceland.
Kópavogur Church is a cruciform church and is therefore traditional in layout,
but its distinctive arches set it apart and give it both a dignified and
gentle character.
The church is considered beautiful and stands as a fine testament to those
who worked on its construction, providing a worthy setting for worship and
devotion. It is located at a site known as Borgir or Borgarholt, an area
protected for its unique character and natural diversity.
From the church there are wide and beautiful views, and many visitors come
not only to enjoy the scenery but also to explore the church and experience
a sense of peace and spiritual renewal.
