The Municipality of Garður, formerly known as Gerðahreppur, is located at the northern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula, on the inner side of the Miðnes area. The municipality borders Sandgerði and Reykjanesbær.
The region is characterized by open coastal landscapes, low-lying terrain, and extensive lava fields shaped by centuries of volcanic activity. Proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has long influenced settlement, livelihoods, and everyday life in the area.
Gerðahreppur became an independent municipality in the early 20th century following administrative changes on the Rosmhvalanes peninsula. The municipality later adopted the name Garður, which remains in use today.
Today, Garður is a close-knit coastal community where fishing traditions, local services, and residential life coexist. Its location provides easy access to the main towns of the Suðurnes region as well as to the capital area.
Garður liggur við sjávarsíðuna á Reykjanesi.
Þorpið er þekkt fyrir viti og sjávarútveg.
