Kirkjuvogur Church was built in 1961 and belongs to the Grindavík Parish. The church was commissioned by Vilhjálmur Hákonarson and is located in the village of Hafnir on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The building reflects the simple and functional architectural style common in Icelandic churches of the 1960s. It serves the local community and remains an important gathering place in the Hafnir area.
Nearby attractions include Hvalnes Church, the town of Sandgerði with its swimming pool and campsite.
Some of the Reykjanes Peninsula’s most famous natural sites are also close by, including the geothermal area of Gunnuhver and the historic Reykjanes Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland.
Kirkjuvogur Church forms part of the long cultural and religious heritage of the southwestern tip of Iceland.
