Sandgerði, formerly known as Miðneshreppur, is a municipality located on the outer coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland. The area covers the western shoreline of Miðnes, extending northward to Garðskagi.
The settlement has long been shaped by its close relationship with the sea. Fishing, coastal trade, and harbor activity formed the foundation of the community, and maritime traditions remain central to local identity.
Miðneshreppur was established as an independent administrative district in the late 19th century following the division of Rosmhvalanes. Over time, the community developed into a trading town and adopted the name Sandgerði, which is still in use today.
Today, Sandgerði is a well-established coastal town closely connected to the Suðurnes region. Its proximity to Reykjanesbær and the capital area makes it an integral part of the wider economic and residential network of southwest Iceland.
Sandgerði er lítið en söguríkt þorp.
Þorpið hefur sterkar tengingar við sjósókn.
