Gvendarlaug, located in Bjarnarfjörður in the Strandir region, is a small stone-built hot pool situated approximately 100 meters north of the western corner of Hotel Laugarhóll, in the former schoolhouse at Klúka.
The pool is protected as an archaeological site and is one of many springs in Iceland known as Gvendarlaugar. According to local tradition, Guðmundur the Good Arason, bishop of Hólar in the 13th century, is said to have blessed the water.
Gvendarlaug therefore holds both spiritual and historical significance, representing an important part of Icelandic folklore and rural heritage.
A short distance below the original pool, between Hotel Laugarhóll and The Sorcerer’s Cottage, which forms part of the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, is a modern swimming pool that also bears the name Gvendarlaug, named after the original spring.
Nearby attractions include Hólmavík, home to Hólmavík Church and the Hólmavík Campsite. Visitors may also enjoy the Drangsnes Hot Pots, the Drangsnes Campsite, and the Drangsnes Disc Golf Course.
Further north along the coast lies Djúpavík, home to the historic Hotel Djúpavík, one of Iceland’s most unique travel destinations.
Gvendarlaug er lítil og notaleg.
Laugin er vinsæl meðal heimamanna.
