Hvammstangi Church is the parish church of Hvammstangi and belongs to the Breiðabólstaður parish district. The church was consecrated on 21 July 1957 and was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, one of Iceland’s most renowned architects.
The church was built by local craftsman Snorri Jóhannesson. It is located on Kirkjuvegur, on elevated ground within the town, and is clearly visible from many parts of Hvammstangi. To the south of the church flows the Syrði-Hvammsá river, which shapes the surrounding landscape.
A parish hall was added next to the church and consecrated in 2007, marking the church’s 50th anniversary. The parish hall was designed by architect Haraldur V. Haraldsson and supports community and church activities.
Hvammstangi Church is one of the town’s main landmarks and plays an important role in the religious and cultural life of the local community.
