Lagarfljót is one of the largest and most famous lakes in East Iceland. It stretches for over 25 kilometres from Fljótsdalur north toward Egilsstaðir, where the river continues to the sea through Lagarfoss. The water is glacial in colour and depth, shaped by meltwater and the constant flow of the river.

For centuries, Lagarfljót has played an important role in the history and folklore of the region. The lake is best known for the legend of the Lagarfljót Worm, a mysterious creature said to inhabit its dark depths. Written accounts of the creature date back to the 14th century, making it one of Iceland’s oldest enduring folktales.

The surroundings of Lagarfljót are characterised by forested slopes, fertile land and wide-open views that change dramatically with the seasons. The area offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, fishing, scenic viewpoints and peaceful nature experiences close to nearby towns. Lagarfljót remains both a natural landmark and a powerful symbol of East Icelandic culture and storytelling.
