Strútsgil and Strútsfoss are located in Strútsdalur valley, inland from the farm Sturluflöt in Fljótsdalur, East Iceland. The area is one of the region’s most dramatic natural features, characterized by a deep and rugged gorge with vividly colored rock formations.
Strútsgil is a narrow gorge reaching depths of up to 25 meters, formed by steep rock walls, cliffs, and distinctive rock pillars. The varied colors and striking shapes of the rock give the gorge a unique and powerful appearance.
At the end of the gorge lies Strútsfoss, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall plunges from a high cliff into the gorge below, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring sight.
Strútsgil and Strútsfoss were added to Iceland’s official register of natural monuments in 1996, highlighting the area’s conservation value and exceptional natural beauty. The site is popular among hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking unspoiled landscapes and impressive scenery.
