Skagafjörður is a broad fjord in North Iceland, located between
the Tröllaskagi peninsula and
Skagi.
The name is also used for the surrounding district that extends inland toward
the central highlands.
The region includes two municipalities:
Skagafjörður Municipality and
Akrahreppur.
Skagafjörður is one of Iceland’s most important agricultural areas, especially
renowned for horse breeding, while commercial fishing plays a major role in
Sauðárkrókur and
Hofsós.
Three islands lie within the fjord:
Málmey,
Drangey, and
Lundey.
Along the eastern shore stands the prominent headland
Þórðarhöfði.
The main river system of the region is
Héraðsvötn,
which flows to the sea in two branches on either side of
Hegranes.
The river system is formed by
Austari-Jökulsá and
Vestari-Jökulsá,
both originating from
Hofsjökull,
and merging near Tunguháls.
Historically, Skagafjörður consisted of many rural districts, some of which have
since been abandoned. At the same time, urban centers such as
Sauðárkrókur,
Varmahlíð, and
Hofsós have developed and grown.
Skagafjörður is known for its wide valleys, fertile farmland, rich
history, and strong cultural traditions, making it one of the most diverse and
important regions in North Iceland.
