Leirubakki Campsite
Leirubakki Campsite is a well-equipped and popular campsite
in South Iceland,
offering excellent views of
Mount Hekla,
one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes.
The site provides facilities for tents,
caravans and motorhomes.
The campsite features modern sanitary facilities,
playground equipment for children
and a family-friendly atmosphere.
Next to the campsite is the
Hekla Centre,
where visitors can learn about the volcano’s history and activity,
as well as enjoy a restaurant on site.
Nearby is the
Viking Pool,
a geothermal outdoor pool set in lava fields
and beautifully lit in the evenings.
Horse rentals are also available at Leirubakki,
offering short and longer riding tours.
A fuel station and small shop are located on site,
selling groceries, drinks,
barbecue supplies and other essentials for travellers.
Electric hookups are available in parts of the campsite,
and advance booking is generally not required
except for larger groups.
Leirubakki is an ideal base for exploring
the
Þjórsárdalur Valley,
with nearby attractions such as
Hjálparfoss,
Gjáin,
Þjófafoss
and
Búrfell.
The campsite offers easy access to some of
South Iceland’s most spectacular volcanic
and historical landscapes.
