Þjófafoss is a powerful waterfall in the river
Þjórsá,
located east of the Merkuhraun lava field in South Iceland. The waterfall
cascades in a wide flow over dark volcanic rock, clearly demonstrating the
immense force of Þjórsá, one of Iceland’s most voluminous rivers. Rising above
the area is
Búrfell,
a volcanic mountain that dominates the surrounding landscape.
Access to Þjófafoss is via a gravel road that is generally passable for all
vehicles during the summer months. Nearby is
Hjálparfoss,
another scenic waterfall in Þjórsárdalur, as well as
Fossabrekkur,
where visitors can enjoy views over the river and its waterfalls.
Close to Þjófafoss lies
Gjáin,
a lush green oasis known for its small streams, waterfalls, and striking
basalt formations, including
Gjárfoss.
The area offers a variety of walking opportunities and showcases the
remarkable contrast between fertile vegetation and rugged volcanic terrain.
The surrounding landscape has been shaped by volcanic eruptions, lava flows,
and powerful rivers over thousands of years. The volcano
Hekla
looms in the distance and has played a major role in shaping both the physical
environment and the human history of the region. Also nearby is
Háifoss,
one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, making the area exceptionally rich in
natural attractions.
Visitors wishing to stay longer in the area will find nearby facilities such
as the
Leirubakki campsite
and accommodation options including
Afternoon Cottages.
Þjófafoss is therefore part of a broader network of natural sights and outdoor
experiences within Þjórsárdalur, offering a memorable stop for travelers
exploring South Iceland.
