Eldborg Crater

Eldborg is a well-defined volcanic crater on the Reykjanes Peninsula, formed during an eruption along the region’s fissure system. It lies within one of Iceland’s most active volcanic zones, shaped by frequent eruptions and geothermal activity.

The crater is known for its symmetrical form and clearly visible rim, making it one of the best examples of crater formation on the peninsula. A short and easy hiking trail leads to the site, making it accessible to most visitors.

The surrounding landscape features young lava fields, volcanic fissures and crater rows. Nearby landmarks include Lambafell, Lambafell Gorge and the iconic mountain Keilir, one of the most recognizable peaks in the area.

Recent eruption sites are close by, including the 2023 Litli-Hrútur eruption and the Fagradalsfjall eruptions, which attracted worldwide attention.

Other nearby natural attractions include Sogin, Trölladyngja and the geothermal area of Seltún. Visitors may also explore Kálfatjörn Church, one of Reykjanes’ most historic churches.

Eldborg is an ideal stop for those wishing to experience Iceland’s volcanic landscapes safely and easily, just a short drive from the capital area.
