Silfrastaðakirkja is located at the farm Silfrastaðir at the entrance to Norðurárdalur in Skagafjörður, North Iceland. The site has long served as an important parish center for the valley.
The present church is octagonal in shape and was built in 1896. It was consecrated on 12 July the same year and has since served the local congregation. Its elevated position provides wide views across the valley and surrounding mountains.
An earlier turf church stood at Silfrastaðir, built in 1842. That church has been preserved at Árbær Open Air Museum in Reykjavík, where it remains an important example of traditional Icelandic church architecture.
The Silfrastaðir land is extensive and includes the mountain area known as Silfrastaðafjall. Much of the surrounding land has been developed for forestry, shaping the landscape around the church today.
Silfrastaðakirkja stands as a significant historical and cultural landmark, reflecting the long settlement and church history of Skagafjörður.
