Kvernufoss is a beautiful waterfall about 30 meters high, located just a short walk from
Skógafoss in South Iceland.
Despite its close proximity to one of the country’s most famous waterfalls,
Kvernufoss is often much quieter and less crowded, making it an excellent stop
for visitors seeking a more peaceful nature experience.
The walk to the waterfall takes approximately 10–15 minutes and follows a scenic,
green canyon that begins near the
Skógar Museum.
The trail is short and accessible for most visitors, making it suitable for families,
photographers, and hikers of all ages.
One of Kvernufoss’s most distinctive features is the opportunity to walk behind the waterfall
and experience the power of the water from an unusual and memorable viewpoint.
The surrounding landscape features moss-covered cliffs, flowing streams,
and a narrow gorge that creates a calm and atmospheric setting.
Several well-known attractions are located nearby, including
Sólheimasandur with the famous
Douglas Dakota DC-3 airplane wreck,
Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier from
Mýrdalsjökull,
and panoramic views toward
Eyjafjallajökull.
Kvernufoss is an ideal stop when exploring South Iceland, combining a short and scenic walk
with easy access to some of the region’s most iconic natural attractions — from waterfalls
and glaciers to black sand plains and historic sites around Skógar.
