Seljavallalaug is one of Iceland’s oldest and most atmospheric outdoor swimming pools, hidden deep within a green mountain valley in East Eyjafjöll. The pool is located at Seljavellir, at the far end of Laugarárgil, where dramatic scenery and near-total silence create a truly memorable setting.

Reaching Seljavallalaug requires a short walk from the parking area, approximately 15–20 minutes along an easy and scenic path. The walk itself is part of the experience, leading through a striking landscape of rock formations, streams, and grassy slopes beneath the towering presence of Eyjafjallajökull.

The pool was built in the early 20th century by young men from the local community, who undertook an impressive feat of endurance and determination. Their work stands as a testament to the importance of swimming and communal effort in rural Icelandic life. Beside the pool is a small concrete building with simple changing rooms that have served visitors for generations.

Seljavallalaug’s surroundings are nothing short of spectacular. A sheer rock wall forms one side of the pool, while nearby Laugará River flows quietly through the valley. Steep mountain slopes, green ridges, and narrow gullies frame the area, creating an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. The silence is broken only by birdsong and the gentle sound of running water.

Today, Seljavallalaug is a protected 25-meter outdoor pool and a popular stop for travelers seeking a blend of history, nature, and adventure. Many visitors combine their visit with nearby highlights such as Skógafoss, Kvernufoss, Stakkholtsgjá, Markarfljót, or hiking areas like Húsadalur and Básar.

The drive from Reykjavík to Seljavallalaug takes approximately 2–3 hours. The journey is richly rewarded by a visit to this unique place, where Icelandic history, raw nature, and quiet beauty come together in an unforgettable way.
