The aircraft wreck, widely associated with Iceland’s south coast, lies on the vast
outwash plain of Sólheimasandur,
near Vík í Mýrdal.
The plane made an emergency landing there between 1970 and 1975 after running out of
fuel during a flight over South Iceland.
The aircraft belonged to the United States military and was used as a cargo and supply
transport plane in Iceland. It regularly transported goods from
Keflavík
to Höfn in Hornafjörður,
where U.S. military personnel were stationed at Stokksnes.
The crew escaped unharmed and was evacuated shortly after the emergency landing.
The aircraft itself, however, was left behind on the sandy plain.
In later years, military personnel returned to remove all usable components,
including engines, wings, and other valuable equipment.
Today, the aircraft wreck remains as a striking reminder of Iceland’s Cold War history.
It has become a popular destination for travelers and photographers visiting
Sólheimasandur,
attracted by the dramatic contrast between the abandoned aircraft and Iceland’s raw,
windswept landscape.
The aircraft is a
Douglas DC-3 (Super Dakota),
a legendary aircraft design from the mid-20th century, renowned for its durability,
reliability, and significant role in both military and civilian aviation.
Flakið liggur á Sólheimasandi.
