The Geographical Centre of Iceland

The geographical centre of Iceland is located in the Skagafjörður region, within the municipality of Skagafjörður. The site lies northeast of Hofsjökull, at approximately 800 metres above sea level.

The location was calculated by Landmælingar Íslands (the National Land Survey of Iceland) at the request of the Icelandic 4x4 Travel Club, which later organized the dedication of the stone marker erected at the site.

The calculation was based on Iceland’s coastline using the national geographic database. Offshore islands were not included in the analysis. The resulting coordinates are: 64°59′11.4″ N, 18°35′12.0″ W.

The idea of marking the centre of Iceland originated among members of the 4x4 Travel Club. An expedition was later undertaken to locate the exact position, where a small cairn was initially built.

A larger and more permanent marker was later chosen: a column of basalt taken from Hrunamannahreppur. Transporting the stone to the remote location proved challenging, but it now stands as a symbolic monument marking the centre of the country.
