Móskarðshnjúkar is a mountain ridge located north of Reykjavík, on the border between Mosfellsbær and Kjalarnes. The area forms part of the Mount Esja mountain range and is one of the most popular hiking areas near the capital.
The mountains rise above Móskarð, a historic mountain pass that once served as an important travel route between Reykjavík and Kjalarnes. The landscape has been shaped by glaciers and volcanic activity during the Ice Age.
Móskarðshnjúkar are known for their colourful rock formations, steep slopes and panoramic views. From the summits, hikers can enjoy views across Faxaflói Bay, Mount Akrafjall, Hvalfjörður and the Icelandic highlands on clear days.
The area is popular year-round for hiking, trail running and ski touring in winter. A variety of routes are available, ranging from easy walks to demanding mountain ascents. Common access points include Esja foothills and Skógarfjall.
Móskarðshnjúkar offer outstanding nature, wide-open views and outdoor recreation only a short drive from Iceland’s capital.
