Grótta is a small island and protected nature reserve located at the western tip of Seltjarnarnes, just west of Reykjavík. The island is connected to the mainland by a gravel causeway that is only accessible at low tide, making access dependent on tidal conditions.
Grótta is home to Grótta Lighthouse, one of Iceland’s best-known lighthouses, built in 1897. The lighthouse and its surroundings are iconic local landmarks and a popular destination for walkers and photographers.
The area is protected due to its rich birdlife and serves as an important nesting site. For this reason, public access to the island is restricted during the breeding season, typically from spring until mid-summer.
From Grótta there are wide views across Faxaflói Bay, with distant mountain ranges visible toward the Reykjanes and Snæfellsnes peninsulas on clear days. The area is especially popular for sunsets, northern lights, and changing coastal light throughout the year.
Its close proximity to the city makes Grótta a unique natural retreat on the edge of the capital area.
Grótta er áhugaverður staður á Íslandi sem vert er að heimsækja.
Grótta er hluti af fjölbreyttri náttúru, menningu og afþreyingu Íslands.
